IRS TAX AUDITS OF EXPATRIATES  MAY INCREASE IN THE FUTURE

In the past, United States Citizens filing expatriate tax returns have not been audited by the Internal Revenue Service that often.  However, this may change soon due to a recently authorized increase in staff in the IRS international tax department due to recent reorganizations.

We recently acquired copies of the questionnaires used by the IRS to conduct audits of Form 2555 which is filed to claim the foreign earned income exclusion.  Such audits are usually conducted by mail and the IRS agent makes their audit decisions based on the documents, and answers supplied to the Agent by the taxpayer being audited.

The following forms are used by the IRS to audit expatriates claiming the foreign earned income exclusion.  Download these forms and use them to determine if you have adequate support for your Form 2555 if your subject to an income tax audit by the IRS.

If you do get audit by the IRS for any reason, let us know and we can help. We have represented hundreds of taxpayers before the IRS on audits involving virtually all issues in the Code and have a very good track record of success for our clients.
